Chapter 24

Wednesday, October 17 to Monday, October 22, 2018

Based on his review of background information, Moses wanted to know more about the Withermans and the Roston family who came after Gunnie died. One of the members of The Moses Team was Hillary Lockton in Denver, Colorado. Hillary was a fifty-something widow who spent the better part of her professional career serving as a paralegal in a large regional law firm headquartered in Denver.

After Lockton’s husband died, she left the large law firm world and set up a business in which she investigated family trees in America. She worked out of her four-level townhome in Denver’s Washington Park neighborhood, Wash Park to the natives. On her top level, if she craned her neck, she could see glimpses of snow-capped mountains. While Denverites can’t always get a good look at the mountains, they always know the Rockies are there. Her clients were ordinary people curious about their past and professionals, like Moses, who wanted to develop background facts for people they investigated. Hillary was good at what she did. Very good. She knew her way around ancestry.com and other online services and used them to develop an ancestral skeleton, and then if her clients wanted more information, she used her considerable on-line research skills to fill in the blanks to put more historical meat on the genealogy bones.

Moses and Hillary had worked together in the past, and he had great confidence in Hillary’s skill set, her accuracy, and the speed with which she worked. He contacted Hillary and explained that he wanted genealogical information for both the Witherman and Roston families and provided Hillary the background information. In particular, he wanted to see the ancestry tree that connected Quincy Gunn Witherman – date of birth circa 1969, to Gunnie Witherman, date of birth circa 1772 – and provided the background information. He also wanted to see the lineage of Francis Marion Roston’s descendants, date of birth circa 1778.

After several days of research, Hillary developed the essential family tree for Gunnie Witherman and Francis Marion Roston, tracing all the way down to Quincy Gunn Witherman and Michaela Roston Huld.

For her written presentation to Moses, she focused on the direct ancestral line from ancestor number one (information provided by Moses) to the subject of Moses’ inquiry. She didn’t trace the lineage of other brothers and sisters, just the ones that led directly to Quincy Witherman and Michaela Huld. Essentially she created an ancestral tree trunk and eliminated most of the branches to focus the analysis and discussion. She emailed the trees to Moses and suggested a follow-up call to discuss her findings.

Moses studied the trees upon receipt of the email, and on Monday, he called Hillary to discuss the findings. Hillary explained that the Witherman tree was straightforward. Gunnie had two children, Betsy, who never married, and Adam. She found the Witherman tree interesting because of the consistency of male offspring between Gunnther and Quincy. The surname, Witherman, was present from Gunnther in the 1700s to Quincy in the present.
